If you would like to commence your pilot training, there are a few things that we recommend you attend to. As a minimum, you require the following:
- Aviation Reference Number (ARN)
An ARN is your unique reference number, used by CASA to monitor your licences, ratings, medicals, etc. You can complete your ARN online here.
- Medical
Complete Class 1 prior to issue of Commercial Pilot Licence, and Class 2 prior to undertaking a solo flight or issuing a Private Pilot Licence. There is a list of Designated Aviation Medical Examiners (DAME) listed here on the casa website. The cost of a medical varies, however, your initial medical will cost between $300-$500.
- Aviation Security Identification Card (ASIC)
You are required to wear an ASIC airside at any security-controlled airport. An ASIC can take up to 6 weeks to be assessed and issued, so we recommend you apply early. You can apply for an ASIC here. The cost of an ASIC is approximately $200.
- Headset
We recommend a Bose A20 noise-cancelling headset. This is a comfortable headset that protects your hearing. The cost of the Bose A20 with Bluetooth is approximately $1,395.
- Kneeboard
We recommend you purchase a kneeboard to aid with navigation exercises. The costs of kneeboards vary, however, for $50 you should be able to purchase a suitable model.
It is recommended that you log on to the CASA website and sign up for the self-service portal to track any applications that you submit to CASA.
